Oxford Opera Society: Carmen

This Trinity, the Oxford Opera Society presents a glittering new production of Bizet’s Carmen, bringing Oxford’s finest performers and musicians together in the Sheldonian Theatre for one night only!

Accompanied by Bizet’s magnificent score, complete with Ernst Guiraud’s beloved recitatives, our fresh interpretation of the world’s most popular opera thrusts audiences into the heart of 1950s Seville. Amidst the chaos of Maquis armed resistance against a crumbling Francoist State, cultural change is afoot, as Hollywood glamour sweeps the nation, steamrolling Franco-Catholic ideals and redefining womanhood forever.

In a world changing rapidly around her, we meet Carmen: our free-spirited star of the show. Passionate, but naïve, she throws herself into the Maquis resistance. However, after falling for Don José, a local corporal whose outward sincerity hides a dark and twisted nature, she realises that her fate may not be in her own hands. She is forced to make a choice: remain loyal to the Maquis and the hope for a better future that it represents; or choose a star-crossed love?

Will the choice she makes change her fate, or has it already been written on the cards?
