Visit

The ceremonial hall of the University of Oxford, the Sheldonian Theatre is one of the most iconic landmarks of the Oxford city centre. Designed by Sir Christopher Wren and opened in 1669, this unique theatre is a must-visit location for anyone visiting Oxford for the best views across the city.

Atop the Sheldonian’s roof is the Cupola, a unique octagonal look out with a distinctive green roof with the best panoramic view across the city centre. Take in the views across Oxford Colleges, the Bodleian Libraries, Broad Street and more.

The Old Printing Loft, set in the rafters of the Sheldonian, once housed the University’s printing presses. Now, the loft is home to our new film, taking you through the history of the Sheldonian Theatre.

On select dates, you can explore the grand auditorium where all University ceremonies take place. Look up and take in the extraordinary painted ceiling by Robert Streater, the court painter for King Charles II. The painting depicts Truth descending onto the Arts and Sciences to expel Ignorance from the University.
